Airspace and the rules

In the United States the FAA sets the rules, and which rules apply depends on why you are flying.

• Flying for pay, including photos for a listing, means flying under Part 107. You need a Remote Pilot Certificate, which you earn by passing the FAA knowledge test.
• Flying for fun means passing the free TRUST safety test and following the recreational rules.

Rules that apply almost every flight

• Stay at or below 400 feet above ground level.
• Keep the aircraft within your visual line of sight.
• Give way to every crewed aircraft. In Juneau that means floatplanes and helicopters, often low and often fast.
• Broadcast Remote ID, either built in or with an add-on module.
• Get authorization before flying in controlled airspace. Near most airports, including Juneau International, LAANC can approve many requests in minutes through apps such as Aloft.

Wildlife counts too. Eagles and marine mammals are federally protected, so keep your distance and never fly at them.
